Internet for All!

I talked about this story on yesterdays show (https://broadband.colorado.gov/category/bead-program), but Agent Jet A followed the rabbit hole. Here's what he was able to calculate.

All of the $53,000 per home to provide fiber optic internet service to home on Indian reservations will have to be funded by increasing the amount of money the Federal Government is borrowing each year. Right now the interest rate on a two year Treasury bond is 4.95%.

4.95% X $53,000 = $2,623 per year in interest cost per home.

The Starlink network currently has more than 3,600 communication satellites in orbit around the earth and you can buy the dish and related equipment to communicate with those satellites for $599 at Home Depot or Best Buy.

Starlink internet speeds range from no less than 25 Megabytes per second (MBPS) up to 220 MBPS with most user seeing speeds in excess of 100 MBPS during most hours of the day. Monthly individual user subscription list price fees are $120 per month per household ($1,440 per year).

Now if the Federal government offered to add 5,000 - 10,000 new user to the network, they could undoubtedly negotiate a better price than the current individual user rate of $120 but even if they couldn't, the federal government would still save that initial $53,000 per home plus at last another $1,000 per year in interest costs on that borrowed money if they just equipped each of those homes with a Starlink system and prepaid their monthly subscription fees for the next 20 years.
