Vanessa Wilson Named Interim Aurora Police Chief

Aurora has pointed Division Chief Vanessa Wilson as Interim Chief of Police, pending a national search to select a new chief. That search could take 6 to 9 months.

In 2015, Wilson became the fist woman to obtain the rank of Division Chief in the Aurora Police Department.

At a press conference Wilson said she is taking the job "at a very turbulent time." The Aurora Police department is under fire for a scuffle with officers that left 23-year-old Elijah McClain dead.. an officer is being investigated for being passed out drunk behind the wheel of his patrol car and shootings continue at the Aurora Towne Center.

Wilson describes the department's relationship with the community as "fractured" and says she wants to restore trust.
