Really, what do you say about our president? I want so much for him to succeed, but he can't help himself. Many people are defending him by saying he's just speaking the truth, and just saying what everyone else already believes. Indeed there is some truth to those defenses, but in terms of the politics of the situation, there is no upside to Trump's comments. It's very bad for him, for the GOP, for international relationships (which I realize that Trump and many of his supporters think aren't very important), for an immigration deal, and, I repeat, for the GOP in the 2018 elections.
Unfortunately, pandering to Trump leads once-rational people to do things they will later be ashamed of, as shown by the new Ambassador (and former Congressman) Pete Hoekstra:
I believe this conversation fairly represents both the nature of the conversation and approximately the national balance of views on the conversation. THIS CONTAINS REPEATED USE OF FOUL LANGUAGE (QUOTING A WORD THAT PRESIDENT TRUMP USED ON THURSDAY)
