In an interview with the gay-community-oriented web site Queerty, a former Sesame Street writer who is gay says he always thought of beloved Sesame Street characters Ernie and Bert as gay, not least because the writer's own partner is named Arnie and people sometimes called them Ernie and Bert.
Frank Oz, the creator of the characters threw the flag:
It seems Mr. Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert & Ernie are gay. It's fine that he feels they are. They're not, of course. But why that question? Does it really matter? Why the need to define people as only gay? There's much more to a human being than just straightness or gayness.— Frank Oz (@TheFrankOzJam) September 18, 2018
So what do you think? Are they? Aren't they? Does it matter?
Or is talking about absolutely anything other than politics just a welcome respite for a few minutes?
