House Nears Vote On Massive Stimulus

House Votes On Stimulus Package To Counter Coronavirus Economic Impacts

A vote on the massive economic stimulus bill is approaching in the House.

The roughly two-trillion dollar measure is the largest rescue package in U.S. history and was passed unanimously by the Senate late Wednesday. It is in response to the growing coronavirus crisis. Virginia Democrat Gerry Connolly said, "America is bleeding" and needs immediate help. Wyoming Republican Liz Cheney said the U.S. has beaten terrible diseases before and will do so again. President Trump is expected to sign the legislation shortly after receiving it.

The normal decorum of the House was interrupted when Michigan Democrat Haley Stevens started yelling about help for doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. She wouldn't sit down when her time was up. Stevens was repeatedly gaveled down by the presiding officer of the House for being "out of order," and she eventually sat down. Meantime, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called this a challenging and unprecedented time in America. He insisted that the bill's focus is on workers and families.

Texas Republican Kevin Brady said the stimulus will provide quick and urgent relief for millions of workers and businesses. Massachusetts Democrat Richard Neal referred to dark and uncertain times in the U.S. Oregon Republican Greg Walden called this a time to set partisanship aside. Ohio Republican Steve Chabot cited help in the bill for small businesses. Oregon Democrat Peter DeFazio said there will be proper government oversight of corporations who will be getting assistance in the legislation. He also noted help for the struggling airline industry.
