Three jurors from the Lindsay Clancy murder trial have revealed that a single holdout juror prevented a unanimous verdict last week, despite acknowledging he had reasonable doubt about the case. The jurors, including foreperson Roni Carlson, described the frustrating deliberations that ended in a mistrial after the panel failed to reach agreement on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for killing her three young children in 2023.

Carlson, a retired fifth-grade teacher, told WBTS that she had begun filling out the verdict forms after the holdout juror admitted he had reasonable doubt. "He admitted he had reasonable doubt. I started filling out the forms, I was so excited. There were three forms I had to fill out, and I started filling them out. I wrote my signature on each one," Carlson said. "And then he said, 'But I'm still not going to say that she's not guilty by reason of insanity.'"

Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, never disputed that she killed five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan Clancy with exercise bands at their Plymouth, Massachusetts home in January 2023. Her attorney argued she had lost control of her mind due to postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness linked to the stress, sleep deprivation, and hormonal changes that follow childbirth. Prosecutors maintained Clancy knew what she was doing and acted deliberately, pointing to evidence that she sent her husband to pick up medicine and dinner to get him out of the house before the killings.

The three jurors who came forward described seven days of deliberations marked by mounting frustration with the holdout juror. Paula Devlin, another juror, characterized him as "arrogant" and said "he really did not take anything that anybody said." Kellie Farina, the third juror to speak publicly, said the holdout "had the hardest time getting over the fact that Lindsay viciously killed her children," despite the panel's discussions about whether Clancy met the legal standard for insanity.

The holdout juror has not yet come forward publicly, and the names of all jurors have been temporarily sealed by the judge. It remains unclear whether prosecutors will seek to retry the case.

If convicted of murder, Clancy could have been sentenced to life in prison. If acquitted, the judge could have ordered her confined to a mental health facility until a mental health evaluation determined she would no longer be a danger to the public if released.
