This extended conversation with a remarkable woman reminds me of a few things: There are some truly amazing people in the world, including people who are willing to sacrifice and risk so much more than most of us are. Also, Afghanistan is, and likely always will be, an ungovernable basket case and it was an incredible error for the United States to engage in "nation building" there.
