Who Needs A Breakout Moment At Tonight’s Debate?

Tonight, Americans can tune into the second GOP presidential debate hosted by FOX Business and Univision. The moderators--Dana Perino, Stuart Varney, and Ilia Calderón--will guide the discussion for the seven candidates on the stage, addressing the issues that voters are most concerned about. The job of the moderator can be a difficult one, tasked with creating debate while maintaining civility. On the Rundown, FOX Business' Stuart Varney says this debate will have all the candidates "pressing hard to make a breakthrough." On the podcast, he explains how this debate will give candidates a chance to discuss big-picture issues for the economy and his plans to encourage more substantive debate between the contenders on stage.   The latest FOX News poll shows that former President Donald Trump remains the party's frontrunner, with nearly a fifty-point lead ahead of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. However, Trump will remain absent from the debate stage this week, maintaining his promise to not participate in any GOP primary debates. After candidates like Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy made headway in the first debate, now candidates are seeking break-out moments the second time around. Karl Rove, former senior advisor, Deputy White House Chief of Staff, and FOX News Contributor, joins the Rundown to reflect on what the candidates did well the first time around and explain why early national polls are not an indicator of the eventual nominee.   Plus, commentary by Republican strategist and co-founder of South & Hill Strategies, Colin Reed. RNC Chair: To Win, GOP Must Sell 'Alternative to Bidenomics'

FOX Business will host the second Republican presidential debate in Simi Valley, California, at 9:00 P.M. ET on Wednesday. With the business network hosting this event, there is likely to be more substantial discussions about the state of the U.S. economy, which recent polling shows a strong majority of Americans are both pessimistic and worried about. Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel joins the podcast to explain her hopes that the FOX Business debate will give the 2024 candidates an opportunity to pitch their fix to America’s struggling economy. She explains why she believes Republicans are well-trusted on economic policy, what she predicts a Trump-Biden rematch might look like, and how the GOP can litigate the issue of abortion on the campaign trail.   There were eleven thousand migrant encounters at the southern border from Sunday to Monday—the most in a twenty-four-hour period. This year, the country has exceeded the record number of illegal crossings, with nearly 2.4 million migrants entering the United States. Thousands of asylum seekers have been bussed to sanctuary cities across the country to combat the surge, but now some of these mayors are demanding the federal government contribute resources to help care for newly arriving migrants. FOX's Washington-based correspondent, Griff Jenkins, joins the Rundown from Eagle Pass, Texas, to discuss how overwhelmed the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials are now, why the majority of migrants entering Texas are first coming from Venezuela, and why the Biden administration favors releases versus the "Remain in Mexico" policy.   Plus, commentary by FOX News contributor Deroy Murdock. Can Congress Avoid A Shutdown?

With the end of the fiscal year coming this Saturday lawmakers must work on a funding extension or risk a government shutdown. GOP leadership in the House is hoping to pass bills that would put them in a better negotiating position with a Democrat-controlled Senate without angering the right flank of the party. Key issues such as funding for the War in Ukraine as well as the border crisis headlining the negotiations. Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS) is the ranking Republican on the Armed Services Committee. Sen. Wicker joins Mike Emanuel on the FOX News Rundown to discuss the negotiations, the border, the War in Ukraine and more. Illinois has become the first state to eliminate cash bail with the "Pretrial Fairness Act," after lawmakers in the state criticized the current system for disproportionately affecting minorities and those not wealthy enough to afford bail. With cashless bail, prosecutors now have to request detentions, and judges must use their discretion to jail people awaiting trial to keep violent criminals off the street. However, critics of the law say posting bail is an incentive for people to show up for their court dates. Former DC Police Detective, defense attorney, and FOX News Contributor Ted Williams joins the Rundown to explain why he breaks down the debate over cashless bail and fears that this amended justice system could favor criminals over law-abiding citizens. Extra: Why The GOP 'Holdouts' Are Holding Out, Risking A Government Shutdown

The government has just days to avert a government.  If the Congress fails to pass either a short-term or full-year spending bill by next Saturday evening, federal agencies will end non-essential functions starting October 1st. However, a small group of Republicans are refusing to go along with their House colleagues to pass a short-term solution. One of those GOP holdouts is Montana Republican Congressman Matt Rosendale. Rep. Rosendale joined the Rundown's Dave Anthony earlier this week to explain why he and few other Republicans are defying Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He explained why he wants to use this opportunity to take a stand against overspending and feels his party's leadership is folding to the Democrats. Rosendale also discussed the possibility of Kevin McCarthy losing his leadership role in the House. We made edits for time and thought you might like to hear our entire conversation with Rep. Matt Rosendale. On today's FOX News Rundown Extra, you'll hear even more of his take on government spending, and why he doesn't fear a shutdown. Learn more about your ad choices.
